Grosser St. Bernhard Tunnel (Great St Bernard)
Switzerland · Kantonsstrasse (KS) Martigny–Aosta (VS / Italy) · 5.8 km
What this restriction means
ADR assigns every tunnel a restriction category from A (no restrictions) to E (the strictest).
The strictest — closed to almost all dangerous goods, except a short listed set and small limited-quantity loads. Marked with an 'E' sign.
Official ADR wording
Restriction for the carriage of all dangerous goods other than those for which '(-)' is marked in column (15) of Table A of Chapter 3.2, and for all dangerous goods in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 3.4 (limited quantities) if the quantities carried exceed 8 tonnes total gross mass per transport unit. NOTE: for goods assigned to UN 2919 and 3331, tunnel-passage restrictions may instead form part of a special arrangement approved by the competent authority on the basis of 1.7.4.2.
Which cargo is affected
Category E tunnels are the strictest — virtually every dangerous good is restricted, with only a handful of narrow exemptions.
Restrictions & provenance
Category E per ADR 1.9.5.2: prohibited for all dangerous goods requiring marking. Exemptions from the E regime (SDR Anhang 2): UN 2814, 2900, 2919, 3077, 3082, 3291, 3331, 3359, 3373 and carriage under 1.1.3 ADR (LQ up to 8 t). Listed in SDR (SR 741.621) Anhang 2 Ziffer 1, consolidated version in force 1 January 2025. Exceptional single-passage permits (Art. 13 Abs. 2bis SDR) exist only for Gotthard and San Bernardino, not for this tunnel.
