On-board emergency equipment

ADR reference — ADR 2025 8.1.4, 8.1.5

Two separate kits ride with every ADR vehicle — fire extinguishers (8.1.4) and miscellaneous + personal protective equipment (8.1.5). The choice of what exactly is required depends on the vehicle mass and the hazard label number of the load.

Fire extinguishers (8.1.4.1).

Transport unit mass Min extinguishers Min total capacity Engine cab At least one ≥
≤ 3.5 t 2 4 kg dry powder 2 kg 2 kg
> 3.5 t, ≤ 7.5 t 2 8 kg 2 kg 6 kg
> 7.5 t 2 12 kg 2 kg 6 kg

Suitable for fire classes A, B, C. A transport unit carrying dangerous goods within the quantity limits of 1.1.3.6 (the exemption related to quantities carried per transport unit — not the limited-quantities regime of 3.4) needs only one 2 kg dry-powder extinguisher (8.1.4.2). Extinguishers must be fitted with a seal showing they have not been used and bear the date of the next inspection or the maximum permissible period of use (8.1.4.4). They are installed so as to be easily accessible to the crew and protected from the weather, and that date must not have expired during carriage (8.1.4.5).

General kit (8.1.5.2) — carried on board the transport unit.

  • A wheel chock for each vehicle, sized for the vehicle’s maximum mass and wheel diameter
  • Two self-standing warning signs
  • Eye rinsing liquid (not required for danger label numbers 1, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3)

Personal kit (8.1.5.2) — one per crew member.

  • High-visibility vest (e.g. EN ISO 20471)
  • Portable lamp conforming to 8.3.4 (no sparking metal parts)
  • Pair of protective gloves
  • Eye protection (e.g. safety glasses)

Class-specific additions (8.1.5.3).

  • Labels 2.3 or 6.1 — respiratory escape mask (e.g. A1B1E1K1-P1 combined filter) per crew member
  • Solids/liquids with labels 3, 4.1, 4.3, 8 or 9 — shovel + drain seal + collecting container

Common mistake — keeping a 5 kg extinguisher as the “big one” on a 10-tonne truck. 8.1.4.1 requires at least one ≥ 6 kg on vehicles over 3.5 t — a 5 kg unit fails the inspection even if total capacity adds up.
